Biotech, devices and digital health: reaching investors, KOLs and trade press at the same time

Optuny Insights · 7 min read

A biotech, a medical device company or a digital health startup has three audiences that never overlap: the investors who fund the science, the key opinion leaders whose endorsement moves it, and the trade press that tells the field it exists. Each needs a different list and a different message, and all three need to run at once.

Quick take Separate the three lists. Investors get the thesis and the data. KOLs get the science and the access. Trade press gets the story. Run them in parallel and report them together.

List one: investors who fund your stage and modality

Life science investors specialize. A fund that does Series A in oncology does not do a device seed round. Map by stage, therapeutic area and modality using their portfolio, not their website. Family offices with a life science focus and strategic corporate venture arms belong on the list too.

List two: KOLs and clinical champions

The clinicians and researchers whose opinion the field follows. They are findable through publications, conference programs and society leadership. They respond to data and to being asked for their view, not to marketing. A 20-minute conversation with the right KOL is worth more than any placement.

List three: trade press and specialist media

The outlets that cover your therapeutic area, the biotech trade press, the device and digital health publications, the podcasts where founders and investors in the field talk. Pitch the science and the founder, with a real hook: data, a milestone, a partnership, a regulatory step.

What can and cannot be said

Regulated claims are regulated claims. Nothing goes out that regulatory counsel has not reviewed, especially about efficacy, safety and timelines. For public life science companies, the issuer compliance layer applies on top. Done right, it is not a burden, it is the reason the audience trusts the message.

Conferences as list-building events

The industry runs on a conference calendar. Each one publishes the attendees, the speakers and the partnering meetings. That is a list. Work it before the show, book the meetings, and follow up after while the conversation is fresh.

Life science outreach checklist
  • Investor list by stage, area and modality, built from portfolios
  • KOL list from publications and conference programs, with a science-first approach
  • Trade press and podcast list, with a hook calendar tied to milestones
  • Regulatory review on everything, issuer compliance on top if public
  • Conference calendar worked before, during and after
  • Weekly report across all three lists
